For 15 years, Steve kept telling himself he needed to get fitter.
But actually taking that first step was another story.
After experiencing a heart problem in his early 50s, he became nervous about exercising and worried about what he could safely do.
Then, an unexpected birthday present changed everything.
The Challenge
Steve had always been active and involved in sport, but after giving it up at 40, the years went by quickly.
He knew he wanted to do something about his fitness, but kept putting it off.
Then, after having a heart problem in his early 50s, exercise became something he was genuinely nervous about.
He wanted to:
- Get fitter and healthier
- Feel confident exercising again
- Improve his overall fitness
- Make positive changes to his lifestyle
But he needed reassurance that he could do it safely.
Why He Nearly Didn't Start
Steve admits that without a little push, he might still be putting it off today.
After years of talking about getting fitter but feeling nervous about exercising, his wife decided to take matters into her own hands.
She surprised him with We Are Group X as a birthday present.
And Steve now describes it as one of the best birthday presents he's ever been given.
The Turning Point
Steve initially thought joining would simply be about exercise and his own fitness journey.
What he didn't expect was the community that came with it.
The coaches reassured him that he could exercise and supported him in becoming fitter, while the other members quickly became friends and gym buddies.
That welcoming environment is a huge part of what's kept Steve coming back for the last 12 months.
The Results
Since joining Group X, Steve has:
Lost around a stone
Become noticeably fitter and stronger
Gained the confidence to exercise again
Found it easier to jog and chase after the dog
Started eating better because he wants to stay fit and healthy
Built friendships and become part of a supportive community
Improved how he feels overall — not just physically
For Steve, the difference goes far beyond simply being able to run a little further or lift a little more.
He feels better all round.
Here's what he had to say:
“Don't hesitate. Don't do what I did and put it off for 15 years. Regardless of your circumstances, be it your weight or your health, just do it. The team here will adapt the classes for you, encourage you and motivate you — and everyone around you will motivate and encourage you as well.”
What This Means for You
If you've been telling yourself for months — or even years — that you need to do something about your fitness, Steve's advice is simple:
Don't keep putting it off.
Whatever your starting point, having the right coaches, encouragement and people around you can make a huge difference.
And you might find that what starts as a decision to get fitter becomes something much bigger — better habits, more confidence, new friendships and feeling better in yourself.
As Steve says: “You're in it together.”
